Poços de Caldas organizes the 1st Seminar on Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security

Poços de Caldas hosted, this Friday (24), the 1st Seminar on Sustainable Food and Nutritional Security. The program included talks by experts on the subject, in addition to the presentation of successful experiences in the field of food safety, throughout the morning, at the Espaço Cultural da Urca.

The event started at 8 am, with “Coffee and prose”, a collaborative coffee with exchange of experiences between those present. The first lecture, given by nutritionist Melissa Luciana de Araújo, had as its theme “The human right to adequate food”. Doctoral student in Health and Nutrition at UFOP, Master at UFMG, Specialist in Nutritional Education, Melissa Araújo is a professor at Faculdades Kennedy/Promove. She coordinated the Permanent Commission on the Human Right to Adequate Food of the Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security Council of Minas Gerais – Consea/MG, for the 2019-20 and 2021-22 biennia. She is also a researcher at the Urban Agriculture Study Group and at the Study, Research and Practice Group in Food Environment and Health of the UFMG of the GEPPAAS.

Subsequently, the event addressed the theme “Possible municipal experiences to implement food and nutrition security policies”, with Leonardo Koury Martins, professor at the Institute of Continuing Education of PUC-MINAS in the program of graduate studies in social assistance policy, former adviser to CONSEA-MG and the Food and Nutrition Security Council of Belo Horizonte. He is currently a researcher in the field of the human right to adequate food, associated with the Brazilian Food Sovereignty and Food Security Research Network Rede penssan.

“Adequate and healthy food in schools” was the theme of the conference by Luiz Felipe de Paiva Lourenção, graduate in nutrition from UNIFAL-MG, master in health sciences from UFLA and specialist in technology and quality of UNIFAL’s food production. Doctoral student in Pediatric Sciences at EPM/UNIFESP, he is Deputy Professor in Social Nutrition at UNIFAL-MG and is currently Nutritionist Agent at the Collaborating Center for School Food and Nutrition – CECANE IFSULDEMINAS.

At the end of the publication, the municipal Food and Nutrition Security agents presented successful experiences in terms of Public Food Security Policies. The 1st Seminar on Sustainable Food and Nutritional Security is organized by the Municipal Council of Food and Nutritional Security of Poços de Caldas (COMSEA), in partnership with the Municipal Department of Social Promotion.

The Municipal Food and Nutrition Security Council of Poços de Caldas was governed by Law 9.053/2015, which provides for the Municipal Food and Nutrition Security Policy of the municipality. The collegial, autonomous, advisory and deliberative body is administratively attached to the Municipal Secretariat for Social Promotion and has the mission of proposing and monitoring food and nutritional security actions and policies at the local level.

The Food Security Coordinator of the Municipal Secretariat for Social Promotion, José Porto, stressed that food and nutritional security is a public policy of fundamental importance for the community, which in Poços de Caldas has equipment and initiatives such as the popular restaurant, the Food Bank and the Food Acquisition Program. “Being able to discuss issues related to food security with specialists is of great importance for us in order to continue to advance in our public policies”, he assesses.
